NextImage Service:
Electrodiagnostic studies (EDX) such as Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) have become extremely important in establishing the diagnosis in work related conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and cervical and lumbar nerve root compression syndromes (radiculopathies).
ACOEM Guidelines recommend that carpal tunnel surgery be performed ONLY if there are abnormal Electrodiagnostic studies found. EDX studies are also recommended in certain cases of persistent lumbar and cervical disc protrusions and in cases of difficult to explain symptoms of pain, weakness or numbness in upper or lower extremities.
The Problem:
EDX/EMG costs have spiraled out of control due to:
- Unmanaged utilization,
- Over-billing by providers, and
- Poor quality studies performed by under-qualified providers.
